IN THE BEGINNING

In the ministry of Jesus, the kingdom of God arrived as announced by John the Baptist Mark 1:1-3.

The gospel of Mark begins with a declaration from the Hebrew Bible that sets the stage for the messianic mission of Jesus Christ. Thus, it opens on a distinct note of fulfillment. Jesus is the promised Messiah of Israel, and with the appearance of John, the long-awaited “season of fulfillment” has begun.

THE CENTURION

In Mark, only at his death did the Roman centurion who was present at his execution recognize who Jesus was.

In Mark, all men prove incapable of recognizing who Jesus is, even his disciples. The only exceptions are John the Baptist and the Roman centurion at Golgotha, the very man in charge of his execution. Mark has threaded this theme throughout his gospel to make the point – The Messiah cannot be understood apart from his death on Calvary.

WORTHY IS THE LAMB

The enthronement of Jesus is based on his past death and resurrection, the immovable foundation of his present reign in Revelation.

The sacrifice and exaltation of Jesus are prominent in the book of Revelation. God’s plan to redeem humanity through him is unveiled in its visions, and his death, resurrection, and enthronement are put into action. His sovereignty over the Cosmos is the result of his faithful obedience and sacrificial death.

HIDDEN MYSTERIES UNVEILED

God’s previously hidden mysteries are now revealed in Jesus, and especially so in his death and resurrection.

The Bible speaks of the “mysteries” of God, His ways that are hidden from human wisdom and defy our expectations. In his teachings, Jesus declared that not everyone can understand the “mysteries of the kingdom.” It is God who reveals the deep and obscure things to whomever He pleases. And in His Son, He has done so for all who have “eyes that can see.”

LORD OVER ALL

Jesus received complete authority from his Father to reign over the Cosmos. Only his kingdom will endure.

At the height of his power, the absolute monarch of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, boasted before heaven and earth, “Is not this Babylon the great and exceptional kingdom that I built by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?” His boast was not an idle one. Babylon was one of the great powers of the ancient world.

JESUS IS THE KEY

Jesus is the key that unlocks the Hebrew Scriptures and divine “mysteries” to reveal the nature and purposes of God.

Not only does Jesus play the central role in unveiling God’s purposes, but he is also the very center of all the Father’s plans, especially the redemption of humanity. Only in Christ is the glory of the Creator of all things revealed, and only His Son is qualified to reveal His true nature. In him, all the promises of God find their fulfillment, their “yea” and “amen.”
