Messiah


WHO IS THIS MAN?

Calvary – (The Son of Man is comprehended in his sufferings and self-sacrificial death for others, especially for his enemies)

The Son of Man – (The one like a Son of Man in Daniel’s vision is the source of Christ’s self-designation as the Son of Man authorized to rule the Kingdom)

The True Light – (Jesus is the only true light, a light that shines all the brighter in the darkness, and this light means life for men)

Empowered by the Spirit – (After his baptism, the Spirit drove Jesus to the Wilderness to be tested by the Devil. But he overcame and succeeded where Israel failed)

The Lamb of Israel – (Jesus is the slain Lamb sent by God to redeem humanity and shepherd the nations)

To Whom Homage? – (Satan offered Jesus unlimited political power for his messianic mission if only he accepted the Devil as his overlord)

Servant and King – (The voice from heaven called Jesus my beloved Son, identifying him as the Messiah and the Servant of Yahweh)

Obedience unto Death – (Christ’s submission to an unjust death is the paradigm for the kind of love and service that disciples are summoned to emulate)

Suffering Son of Man – (According to Mark, the Son of Man was revealed only in his sufferings and death on a Roman Cross)

Son of Abraham – (Jesus is the true Son of Abraham, the heir of the promises, the Anointed One who fulfills and implements the inheritance for his people)

The Greater Lawgiver – (In Matthew, Jesus is the Greater Moses who interprets the Law and the Prophets and brings them to fulfillment)

The Law and the Prophets – (Jesus came to bring all this is promised and foreshadowed in the Hebrew scriptures to fulfillment)

Jesus Reveals the Father – (The fullness and truth of God are unveiled in the Word made Flesh, Jesus of Nazareth)

Jesus and the Centurion – (Only in his sacrificial death can the identity of Jesus and the nature of his messiahship be understood – Mark 15:29-45)

The Man of the Spirit – (Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed Son of God. From the start, his life was characterized by the empowering presence of the Spirit – Matthew 1:20)

This is My Son! – (The Spirit of God and the voice from heaven confirmed the calling and identity of Jesus – Son of God and Messiah of Israel)

HIS MINISTRY

Unexpected, Rejected, Crucified – (The Son of Man is revealed and comprehended in his sufferings and self-sacrificial death for others, including his enemies)

Call His Name Jesus – (Matthew 1:18-21 – His name signifies that, “He will save his people from their sins”)

Priest Forever – (His priesthood is superior since it rests on his endless resurrection life and God’s oath)

Merciful and Faithful High Priest – (His priesthood is valid and trustworthy because Jesus died the same death as all men)

Servant of the LORD – (At his baptism in the Jordan, the voice from heaven identified Jesus as the Son of God and the Servant of Yahweh)

THE WORD MADE FLESH

God Has Spoken! – (God’s definitive word has been spoken in His Son. All previous words were preparatory and incomplete)

Upon These Last Days(The era of the Aaronic priesthood terminated with the arrival of the word in God’s Son, our High Priest forevermore)

The Word Made Flesh – (Jesus is the Word made flesh in whom the glory of God is revealed, the same word by which God created all things)

His Glory Revealed – (Ever since the Word became flesh, the glory of God is manifested in Jesus of Nazareth and beheld by everyone who believes on him – John 1:14)
