REIGNING WITH JESUS

Disciples reign with Jesus as “priests” who render service in his Tabernacle by mediating his light in the world.

In Revelation, the present sovereignty of Jesus is based on his past death and resurrection, and because of his sacrificial death, his disciples now reign with him. But like him, their elevation to rule over the earth is paradoxical – it is characterized by self-sacrificial service, for the outpouring of his lifeblood has consecrated them as “priests” for God.

To Whom Homage?

Satan tempted Jesus with political power over “all the kingdoms of the world.” But the man from Nazareth refused the offer. Instead of might and grandeur, he submitted to the way of the ‘Suffering Servant.’ But the most startling detail is that he did not dispute the Devil’s claim to have jurisdiction over the political systems of the world.

The Mission of the Church

The mission of the church between now and the return of Jesus is to announce the Good News of his Kingdom to all men.

Jesus tasked his church with announcing his gospel to all nations. The New Testament summarizes his message as the “good news of the Kingdom of God.” In him, God’s rule over the earth is being established, though often in unexpected and paradoxical ways. By the time Christ returns, he will have established total sovereignty over the nations and subjugated all His “enemies,” especially the “last enemy,” death.

SIGN OF THE END

Jesus declared, definitively, that the “end” will not come until “this gospel of the kingdom of God is proclaimed to all nations.”

When we discuss the future coming of Jesus, quite naturally we ask what “signs” will precede it. Wars, earthquakes, tsunamis, famines, and the like? Spectacular cosmic events in the heavens? The rise of unprecedented evil and chaos? Fortunately, Jesus provided us with a most definitive answer – The completion of the church’s mission.

PREACH THE GOSPEL!

Jesus declared that the “end” will not come until “this gospel of the kingdom of God has been proclaimed to all nations.”

Discussions about the Second Coming always raise the question – What “signs” will precede that day? And invariably, wars, earthquakes, tsunamis, famines, and similar catastrophes are proposed as harbingers of the end. But Jesus gave a most definitive answer – The completion of the Church’s mission. In other words, preach the gospel.
