Do Not Drift Away

The first chapter of Hebrews stresses the supremacy of the high priest who now sits at the “right hand of the majesty on high.” First, the eternal sovereignty of God is described (“Your throne, O God, is to times everlasting”), then, the qualifications of the Son for the priesthood are stated (“You loved righteousness and hated lawlessness”).

This leads to the letter’s first exhortation and severe warning. Considering the excellency of the Son’s name and his exalted status, any failure to heed the “word spoken” by God in him will result in horrific consequences.

These Last Days

God has spoken His superior “word” in His son, Jesus – “upon the end of these days.” This last clause refers to the end of the period epitomized by the Levitical code with its priesthood and animal sacrifices centered in the Tabernacle. The letter shows only limited interest in the final events expected to occur just prior to the return of Christ in glory. The focus is on the present situation of the church and what it must do to avoid apostasy.

In Romans, Paul stresses the “righteousness of God” revealed in the gospel. It is the “power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,” and a “righteousness” that is being proclaimed throughout the earth to “Jews and Greeks” alike.

IN THE CHURCH

John labels false teachers in the church as “antichrists,” and their deceptive teachings confirm that the “last days” have commenced.

The term “antichrist” occurs only in the second and third letters of John, and he applies the plural noun to deceivers that are causing dissension in his congregations. Their very presence constitutes irrefutable evidence that the “last days” have commenced. These troublemakers are “antichrists” and forerunners of the “Antichrist” who is to come.

THE COMING STORM

The New Testament warns of a future apostasy caused by deceivers that will precede the day of the Lord.

The New Testament warns repeatedly and consistently that before Jesus arrives at the end of the age the church will find itself under assault from within by deceivers. And before the “day of the Lord” comes, his disciples will be confronted by the “man of lawlessness,” a figure linked inextricably to the coming “apostasy.”
